Ocasio-Cortez’s House seat could be eliminated during redistricting

Self-proclaimed socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-NY) days in Congress may be numbered.

Ocasio-Cortez could be the lawmaker who gets the boot when New York’s Democratic Party redraws its congressional districts, The Daily Wire reported.

Due to New York’s significant population loss over the previous year, the state’s legislature must redraw its congressional districts, which will cost one representative in the state a seat.

As noted by the Daily Wire, Ocasio-Cortez “has not ingratiated herself to New York’s Democrats, preferring to build a more national profile than assist the state party in fundraising,” making it a very real possibility that she will be the one New York Democrats oust.

Challenge Schumer

There have been rumors for several months that Ocasio-Cortez is eyeing Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-NY) seat. Ocasio-Cortez has refused to directly admit this in public, but on more than one occasion she has made it clear that she is keeping this option open.

According to Politico, Schumer is well aware of this and has been doing what he can to make sure that Ocasio-Cortez will not stand a chance against him in a head-to-head race.

“Schumer, who is up for reelection in 2022, has been taking steps both publicly and privately to steel himself from a left-wing primary challenge — especially from his biggest threat, Ocasio-Cortez,” Politico reported.

Schumer, according to Politico, has been moving to the left in an attempt to gain favor with the sort of voters who support Ocasio-Cortez, even meeting with far-left groups such as the Sunrise Movement.

“Schumer has thrown his weight behind a plan to cancel student loan debt by executive order,” Politico reported. “He’s voted against the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. He’s said ‘nothing is off the table’ when it comes to eliminating the filibuster. And that’s only a fraction of the progressive moves he’s made in recent years.”

Progressive promises

As the Daily Wire noted, the next two years will be especially important for Schumer.

Progressives and socialists in the Democratic Party will be keeping a close eye on Schumer as he is now the Majority Leader of the U.S. Senate.

If Schumer does not make good on some of the far-left policies that he has been promising, he will be more vulnerable and more likely to see a challenge from Ocasio-Cortez in 2022.
