‘Hilarious’: Obama insider laughs off characterization of Kamala Harris as a ‘moderate’

While The New York Times has described vice presidential hopeful Kamala Harris as a “pragmatic moderate,” one Democrat insider has just confirmed that she’s anything but.

“It was hilarious to me that [Harris] is being called in all this coverage a moderate, like Joe Biden has found a fellow moderate or centrist,” Jon Favreau, former chief speechwriter for President Barack Obama, said on a recent episode of his podcast, according to the Daily Wire.

“[Harris] supports something extremely close to Medicare For All, which Bernie Sanders acknowledged in his statement supporting her,” Favreau explained. “She’s for the Green New Deal. She has one of the most liberal records in the U.S. Senate.”

The moderate choice?

Indeed, from health care to the environment to gun rights to immigration, politicians just don’t get much farther to the left than Harris. But that’s apparently not how the NYT sees it.

According to the Daily Wire, the Times published an article Tuesday alleging that the California senator was “among the safest choices available” to Joe Biden in his search for a running mate.

The Times reported: “She has been a reliable ally of the Democratic establishment, with flexible policy priorities that largely mirror Mr. Biden’s, and her supporters argued that she could reinforce Mr. Biden’s appeal to Black voters and women without stirring particularly vehement opposition on the right or left.”

The Times must have missed the reaction from progressives like former Bernie Sanders press secretary Briahna Joy Gray, who slammed Harris’ record as a “top cop” amid ongoing calls to defund the police.

The bottom line

Favreau, for his part, suggested that what mainstream media outlets like The New York Times are trying to do with pieces like this one is convince their readers that what was once the far left of the Democratic Party is now the center.

“If you want to call Kamala Harris’ record in the Senate and her policies that she’s supporting now centrist or moderate, great,” Favreau said, according to the Daily Wire. “If that’s where the Overton Window has moved, then congratulations to all the progressive activists because you have…moved the s*** out of that window, that supporting the Green New Deal and, basically, Medicare For All is now moderate and centrist.

“Fantastic,” Favreau said, “I’ll take it.”

But it may not be time for Dems to celebrate just yet. If Favreau is right, and Democrats really are lunging left, President Donald Trump likely won’t have much trouble rounding up independent voters who aren’t ready for progressive policies like universal health care this November. Four more years, anyone?
