Despite finding that Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo likely violated federal and state law with a pattern of sexual harassment and misconduct, a recent report from state Attorney General Letitia James did not advocate the pursuit of criminal charges.
Other prosecutors across the state, however, are apparently not going to be so generous.
According to Breitbart, several district attorneys are in the process of determining whether or not to bring charges against the sitting governor.
District attorneys seek details from AG probe
So far, the number of prosecutors pursuing possible charges totals at least four: the district attorneys in Manhattan, Albany, Nassau, and Westchester counties.
Each of the offices has asked James for a copy of the evidence she has compiled against Cuomo.
This week, the attorney general released the report finding 11 credible claims against the governor. All of the accusers are current or former state employees.
Upon receiving the requested evidence, the district attorneys will reach their own conclusions regarding whether criminal charges are warranted.
“That is just not who I am”
According to her report, James has concluded that Cuomo engaged in “unwanted” acts including groping, kissing, hugging, and making inappropriate comments.
For his part, Cuomo has thus far remained defiant and continues to deny any wrongdoing.
In a response to the attorney general’s report, he said: “I never touched anyone inappropriately, or made inappropriate sexual advances. I am 63 years old. I lived my entire adult life in public view. That is just not who I am and that is not who I have ever been. It’s important to me that you fully understand that.”
Aside from possible criminal charges, Cuomo is currently facing bipartisan pressure to resign or be impeached. Among the prominent Democrats to make such a call this week are President Joe Biden, Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY), and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).
It remains to be seen whether an impeachment probe being handled by New York’s Democratic-led legislature will end with Cuomo being removed from office. He has already managed to withstand a number of other scandals apparently unscathed, including allegations that his policies led to increased COVID-19 deaths in the state’s nursing home.
