Nick Gordon, the 30-year-old celebrity hanger-on who became notorious for his alleged involvement in the overdose-related death of Bobbi Kristina Brown — daughter of singers Bobby Brown and the late Whitney Houston — died on New Year’s Day from what reports have alleged to be a drug overdose, the Daily Mail reported.
Gordon reportedly suffered a series of heart attacks and ultimately died from a suspected drug overdose while at a hospital in Florida after partying with friends on New Year’s Eve.
“It’s early days but the suggestion is he was taking drugs with friends and he passed out. They drove him to the hospital, took him inside and then left him there.” a family insider told the Daily Mail.
The insider went on: “Whatever you think of Nick and his lifestyle, it’s terribly sad that his supposed friends just dumped him and drove away.”
An opioid overdose
Gordon was reported to be living with friends after his mother moved to Hawaii and he had broken up with his on-off girlfriend Laura Leal, who had accused Gordon of abusive conduct in the past, but who had never followed through on pressing criminal charges against him.
According to TMZ, which obtained the audio of the 911 dispatch call involving Gordon’s emergency, there were strong indications that he suffered an overdose from some sort of opioid drug.
Though the 911 call was filed as a “cardiac respiratory” event, audio reveals that there had been “black stuff” seen coming out of Gordon’s mouth. TMZ noted that opioid overdoses can sometimes involve the discharge of a black fluid “foam cone” from the mouth and nose.
It is expected that the medical examiner will conduct an autopsy on Gordon, and the results of toxicology testing could be released in a matter of a few weeks.
A tragic family history
Gordon’s suspected death from a drug overdose is nothing short of ironic given the fact that he is alleged to have been involved in the 2015 death of his then-romantic partner Bobbi Kristina Brown, who was found unresponsive in a tub at the Georgia home they shared. Brown was suspected to have overdosed as well, and she ultimately died following six months in a medically-induced coma.
Though Gordon was never criminally charged in Brown’s death, he was found liable in a civil lawsuit filed by the Brown family and ordered to pay $36 million in damages.
Bobbi Kristina’s death at only 22 years of age was shockingly similar to that of her mother, pop superstar Whitney Houston, who was found dead from drowning in a hotel bathtub after a drug overdose in 2012.
With Gordon now apparently having died from a drug overdose as well, it should only be even more obvious that drug abuse and opioid addiction are extremely serious issues that demand more attention, lest even more people succumb to the epidemic at a tragically early age.
