New Mexico governor accused of violating state’s shutdown order to purchase jewelry

Another Democratic governor appears to have been caught violating state shutdown orders put in place to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham reportedly ignored her own order closing nonessential businesses statewide in order to make a jewelry purchase last month, according to Breitbart.

“A longstanding personal relationship”

As KRQE initially reported, Lujan Grisham contacted a local high-end jewelry store to ask an employee to violate that order. According to the report, she called an employee at Lilly Barrack, who in turn entered the store and retrieved the jewelry, leaving it outside for someone else to pick up and deliver.

The store’s manager was reportedly unaware of the transaction until after the fact and confirmed that nobody was supposed to be inside the store at the time.

Although Lujan Grisham initially declined to respond, a spokesperson provided a statement offering a different version of events.

“Lujan Grisham did call an employee, saying they had a longstanding personal relationship,” the spokesperson said, according to Breitbart. “The employee came here [Lilly Barrack], got the jewelry and took it home, left it outside their home and then someone came and picked it up.”

Even in that scenario, however, it would appear that she encouraged the violation of the lockdown.

Other Democrats facing questions

This incident represents just one example of a Democratic governor accused of violating state orders.

Earlier this month, the Detroit News reported that Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s husband attempted to use her name to get their boat in the water ahead of the Memorial Day weekend. She later attempted to downplay the incident as a poor attempt at humor by her husband.

“He thought it might get a laugh,” Whitmer said, according to the Detroit Free Press. “It didn’t, and to be honest I wasn’t laughing either when it was relayed to me because I knew how it would be perceived.”

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, also a Democrat, acknowledged that his wife left the state while a shelter-in-place order was in effect to travel to Florida, Breitbart noted.

Democrats across the country have pointed to the Trump administration as a sign of failed leadership throughout this health crisis. These and other examples, however, reveal that some leaders in that party are having a hard time following their own directives.
