Hunter Biden has faced extensive speculation regarding international business deals that suggest a potential conflict of interest for the son of former Vice President Joe Biden.
As the elder Biden pursues his own White House bid, new questions are now surfacing about his son-in-law, Howard Krein, as reported by Politico.
A series of dubious connections
New revelations indicate that Krein had been serving as an informal adviser to the Biden campaign on the issue of COVID-19 even as he maintained an executive position at an investment firm focused on funding healthcare startup firms related to the pandemic.
That firm, StartUp Health, first unveiled an initiative in March to attract entrepreneurs and innovators in need of funding for potential solutions to the coronavirus.
The following month, Krein began advising Joe Biden on healthcare policy, specifically the growing public health crisis related to COVID-19. This transition occurred around the same time that StartUp Health announced it would invest $1 million among 10 startups with coronavirus-related products heading to the market.
Krein’s dual positions led to the perception that he had been profiting off of his family’s political influence, leading to allegations of a conflict of interest.
The questionable connections extended beyond the pandemic, however, to include a fund worth more than $31 million from which Krein’s company has invested in hundreds of healthcare-related ventures related to all sorts of issues.
“Getting rich off connections to Joe”
Furthermore, the investment firm’s ties to foreign companies and investors — particularly those based in China — have raised even more questions.
StartUp Health declined requests for comment. As for the Biden campaign, a source acknowledged Krein’s role in the campaign but stressed that it was limited to that of an informal adviser.
During a rally in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, President Donald Trump riffed on the latest scandal impacting his rival’s family, as reported by Breitbart.
“Just this week, we learned that another member of the Biden family is getting rich off connections to Joe,” Trump said. “His son-in-law — just came out, big story — is cashing in on the China virus pandemic.”
While allegations against Hunter Biden have largely fallen on deaf ears among the media elite, it remains to be seen whether the Democratic nominee’s son-in-law will receive similar treatment.
