NBC News finally conducts analysis of Hunter Biden laptop, acknowledge potential ethical and legal problems

In October 2020, the New York Post published bombshell reports about scandalous information obtained from an abandoned laptop belonging to Hunter Biden, but those damning reports were widely dismissed, ignored, and even mocked by much of the rest of the mainstream media.

Now, a year and a half after the initial reports about Biden’s laptop, NBC News has finally deemed the matter worthy enough of coverage, and what it found doesn’t look good for the Biden family, Fox News reported.

The belated NBC report comes as a bit of a surprise, given that it had initially refused to report deeply on the contents of the laptop and had even seemed to join in with, or at least not dispute, the false assertions from others in the media, particularly on sister cable network MSNBC, that the laptop’s contents were “Russian disinformation” or a dirty trick from the Trump campaign.

Made a lot of money and spent it quickly

According to this new lengthy report from NBC News, it has finally analyzed the Biden laptop’s hard drive and compared that information with a report produced by Senate Republicans as well as what Biden himself wrote in his autobiography.

It found that, between 2013 and 2018, Biden earned around $11 million in a handful of dubious foreign business deals, including with a Chinese businessman now accused of bribery and corruption, as well as his ethically questionable position on the board of corrupt Ukrainian energy company Burisma Holdings.

Unfortunately for Biden, all of that money and then some was spent just as fast as it was earned, including on alcohol and drugs and parties and a luxurious lifestyle, eventually leaving himself and his ex-wife deeply in debt and with substantial unpaid taxes.

Indeed, Biden has acknowledged that he is currently the subject of a federal investigation into his tax problems and foreign business dealings, but has insisted that he is innocent of wrongdoing and will eventually be cleared of all suspicion.

Toeing the line of acceptable ethics

“No government ethics rules apply to him,” Walter Schaub, former director of the U.S. Office of Government Ethics, told NBC of Hunter Biden. However, “it’s imperative that no one at DOJ and no one at the White House interfere with the criminal investigation in Delaware.”

NBC noted that Schaub has previously been critical of Biden’s dubious business activities and how they toe the line of ethical behavior, but has stopped short of fully condemning Hunter or accepting at face-value the allegations that his business dealings could spell trouble for his father, President Joe Biden.

“Family members of presidents and other political officials are going to make money. They’re going to have jobs. They’re private citizens. And it’s really not for us to say how or when they make money,” Schaub said. “Unfortunately, Hunter Biden seems a lot like somebody whose primary profession is being Joe Biden’s son. But unless there’s a direct connection to Joe Biden, that’s really more of a criticism of one private citizen rather than a government official or an administration.”

Laptop contents raise questions

In that regard, the NBC report made it point to note that nothing it had seen on the hard drive provided conclusive evidence in support of allegations that Joe Biden had profited from his son’s foreign business dealings.

That said, the outlet did acknowledge that what it had seen raised “questions about national security, business ethics and potential legal exposure” for the Biden family, and that once Republicans had taken back control of the House and Senate, there would be congressional investigations into the matters at hand.
