Nancy Pelosi says Democrats who vote with the GOP could lose campaign funding

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has made a fatal mistake: she’s revealed the true nature of the Democratic Party.

According to new reports, Pelosi has outright threatened Democrats that anyone who votes in favor of Republican-backed legislation could lose the support of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), which the House speaker says will prioritize those who have the “courage” to vote against the GOP.

“This is not a day at the beach,” Pelosi reportedly said in a closed-door party meeting. “This is the Congress of the United States.”

An Embarrassing Defeat

Pelosi’s threat came after what many in the media called an “embarrassing” defeat for Democrats.

House Dems had passed a bill would require background checks before any and all gun sales. But at the last minute, Republicans moved to add a provision requiring that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) be notified if it is discovered that the potential customer is in the country illegally during such a background check.

A whopping 26 Dems supported the move, which muddied the waters of the bill that Dems thought would be a landmark victory.

“[I] had to choose between immigrants and gun violence. Not because of Republicans, but because of Democrats,” freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) reportedly lamented in the meeting.

Forgetting Their Purpose

The reaction on this from Pelosi has made it quite apparent that the Dems have lost her way.

Indeed, the leader of the Democratic Party effectively told her fellow representatives to forget their constituents and hold the party line.

Pelosi enjoyed the support of Ocasio-Cortez, who “suggested she would alert progressive activists when Democrats are voting with the GOP on these motions,” according to Politico.

These moves have made it clear that the Dems aren’t concerned about the American people — only their own personal gain.

All Bark, No Bite

Though Pelosi’s threat sounds ominous, it will more than likely not have very much bite.

Pelosi can grandstand all she wants, but these representatives must vote based on the will of their constituents.

To that point, it is highly unlikely that the DCCC will actually withhold money from a representative because they voted in favor of legislation that would actually benefit their voters.

There even seems to be some pushback in the party to Pelosi’s threat. Reps. Steny Hoyer (MD) and Jim Clyburn (SC), who are considered two of Pelosi’s lieutenants, have already reportedly spoken to more moderate Democrats on the issue, urging them to vote on their own accords.

That’s how our government is supposed to work. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like Nancy Pelosi got that memo.
