House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) just can’t get past the fact that her impeachment crusade was a spectacular failure.
Pelosi sat down with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour for an interview this week. According to the Daily Caller, when Amanpour referenced Trump’s post-acquittal “liberation” and approval ratings, Pelosi had somewhat of a meltdown concerning the claim that Trump was actually acquitted.
Trump never acquitted
Indeed, Pelosi seems to be of the opinion the president was never acquitted.
Amanpour asked: “What about, though, the fact that the president seems liberated, and this is about democratic politics so I’m not asking you to criticize here, but he was acquitted, his poll ratings are high…”
That’s when Pelosi interrupted to protest: “You can’t have an acquittal unless you have a trial, and you can’t have a trial unless you have witnesses and documents.”
She went on: “So he can say he’s acquitted, and the headlines can say ‘acquitted,’ but he’s impeached forever, branded with that, and not vindicated.”
There is no irony with Nancy Pelosi; this is something she truly believes. In her mind, President Trump is “forever impeached,” no matter the outcome of the actual trial.
This view is widespread within the Democratic Party. It took a matter of days for the House impeachment managers to insist that Trump had not been acquitted.
According to the Daily Caller, during an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper right after the trial, the impeachment managers said: “Well, and back to the acquittal part of this, I would consider that fake news, because we did not have a fair trial. The president is not exonerated today.”
Trump is exonerated
If Democrats want to play the semantics game and discredit the acquittal over having no witnesses, two can play that game.
If there are to be arguments that ignore the reality of what happened, the arguments favor the president. With that, impeachment should never have happened. It may very well be time for Democrats to retire Pelosi if they want any chance of winning.
