White House stance on immigration muddled by ‘mixed messages’ as crisis mounts at US-Mexico border

Former President Donald Trump predicted that America’s immigration problems would only worsen under Joe Biden’s administration — and so far, he’s been proven exactly right.

Breitbart reports that the White House exacerbated its troubles at the U.S.–Mexico border this week by mistakenly announcing in Spanish that the border is open, before trying to walk that statement back.

Which is it?

The incident involved National Security Council adviser Roberta Jacobson, who spoke at a press briefing Wednesday.

At one point during the presser, Jacobson switched from speaking in English to Spanish to affirm, “La frontera no esta cerrada.” According to Breitbart, the phrase translates to: “The border is not closed.”

But that doesn’t seem to be the message President Joe Biden and his administration were trying to convey. Later in the briefing, Jacobson was handed a note by a White House aide, apparently prompting her to issue a clarification.

“La frontera esta cerrada,” Jacobson then declared. In other words: “The border is closed.”

Lack of clarity

According to Breitbart, Jacobson later admitted that the White House’s immigration agenda has been muddled by “mixed messages.”

“I will certainly agree we are trying to walk and chew gum at the same time,” she said, as Breitbart reported. But the White House would do well to get their story straight.

Indeed, over the last several months, the Biden administration has been, at best, ambiguous on the issue of immigration. Shortly after taking office, Biden took action to reverse dozens of Trump-era policies in a move that many apparently took as a sign that the borders would be more permeable under a Democrat president: according to The Hill, just the first six weeks of Biden’s reign saw thousands of migrants flowing in through our southern border, many of them unaccompanied children.

A growing crisis

Republicans are now calling it an all-out crisis at the U.S.–Mexico border. And with its lack of clarity, the Biden White House certainly isn’t helping matters.

Pressed on Jacobson’s verbal slip-up, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said this week: “Well, given she also said that the border is closed, we’re hopeful that that is what will be picked up. And that has clearly and consistently been our message.”

As Breitbart notes, however, one needs only to go back to Tuesday to find Biden’s top spokeswoman saying plainly: “We are not trying to close our borders.” So which is it, Joe?
