Civil rights attorney and outspoken Democrat Leo Terrell said in an explosive interview on Fox News’ Hannity Friday night that he is “embarrassed to be a Democrat” after the Democratic National Committee (DNC) equated Mount Rushmore with white supremacy, the Daily Caller reported.
According to the Daily Caller, the DNC tweeted ahead of President Donald Trump’s July 4 speech at the monument: “Trump has disrespected Native communities time and again. He’s attempted to limit their voting rights and blocked critical pandemic relief. Now he’s holding a rally glorifying white supremacy at Mount Rushmore, a region once sacred to tribal communities.”
The tweet was later deleted.
“That tweet — I want people to hear this,” Terrell said, according to the Daily Caller, “The Democratic Party calling this a ‘white supremacy’ meeting is the race card at its highest level and that came from the Democratic Party.”
A “great place” to celebrate
Terrell told guest host Jason Chaffetz that Mount Rushmore was “a great place for the president to celebrate our nation’s birthday,” the Daily Caller noted.
“The bottom line is simply this,” he added, “if you are a Democrat, you can be a racist. But the point here is, you accuse the Republicans of being racist and there is no evidence of that whatsoever. It’s embarrassing and I am embarrassed to be a Democrat tonight.”
South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, a Republican, also reacted to the DNC’s tweet, saying that it reflected poorly on Democrats who hope to be elected in November.
“Honestly, that tweet right there represents the choice that people have in this election,” Noem said in a separate appearance on Fox, according to the Daily Caller. The Republican has been fierce in defending the monument from potential physical attacks after it was threatened by protesters who had been toppling statues of some of the Founding Fathers.
“Not on my watch,” she said firmly after protesters talked about defacing or trying to destroy the monument, as the New York Post reported.
Liberal press pounces
Noem and President Trump both gave impassioned speeches before enthusiastic crowds at the monument on Independence Day. For his part, Trump defended the nation’s founding principles when he spoke, explaining why figures like Washington and Lincoln needed to be revered, and pledging to stop Democrats from rewriting history and trying to destroy the nation with “cancel culture.”
Of course, the usual liberal press outlets called the speech “divisive” while praising remarks from Joe Biden, who said America has never lived up to its foundational pledges and needs to elect him in order to do so.
Americans will get to decide in November with whom they agree on this point — but by calling out historic monuments like Mount Rushmore, it’s clear Democrats are only pushing voters further and further away.
