Megyn Kelly was brutally reminded she works for a liberal-oriented outlet after she made a politically incorrect statement about Halloween costumes.
Now those statements are coming back to bite her, as sources say officials at NBC are prepared to announce the cancellation of Kelly’s show “Today.”
The furor started during a segment on the “Today” show.
Kelly insinuated it was no big deal for kids to wear ‘blackface’ as part of their Halloween costume.
“Back when I was a kid, that was OK,” Kelly stated.
The backlash was immediate.
On Wednesday, Kelly offered an emotional apology for her comments.
Not long afterwards, executives hinted the time may have come to wrap up the Kelly experiment on daytime TV and put her in a more comfortable environment… news.
The Excuse They Needed
In all likelihood, this was exactly the excuse network executives were looking for to end this disastrous experiment.
NBC thought it pulled off the coup of the decade by luring Kelly away from Fox News, but they could not have been more wrong.
Conservative viewers at Fox had long been expressing their disdain for Kelly as someone that would take any stance if it meant creating headlines and viewers.
Her run-ins with President Trump and her unprofessional “attitude” during the debates did nothing to help her case.
According to previous reports, the network is worried the high costs of having Kelly on the show are never going to be recouped with such poor ratings.
This unforced error by Kelly gives them exactly the excuse they need to move her off daytime TV and put her back behind a desk reporting the news.
Andy Lack, NBC News Chairman, stated, “There is no other way to put this, but I condemn those remarks. There is no place on our air or in this workplace for them.”
“As we go forward, my highest priority remains, and as we sort through this with Megyn, let there be no doubt that this is a workplace in which you need to be proud and in which we respect each other in all the ways we know is foundational to who we are,” he added.
If you read between the lines, it actually sounds like the network is seriously considering letting her go entirely rather than just moving her to new programming.
Update: A new report from the Daily Mail indicates that Kelly is totally out at NBC.
