Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, who along with her husband Prince Harry has dominated the headlines following a bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, is reportedly considering a new career path in the world of U.S. politics, the Daily Mail reported.
According to an unnamed British Labour Party official, Markle, an outspoken critic of former President Donald Trump, has apparently been rubbing elbows with leaders in the Democratic Party with potential ambitions of making a run for the White House in 2024.
What about Joe Biden?
Markle is reportedly mulling a potential run just in case President Joe Biden, who will be 82-years-old by the 2024 presidential election, decides not to run for a second term.
“The Blairite, internationalist and Democratic party networks are buzzing with talk about Meghan’s political ambitions and potential backers,” said the anonymous Labour Party official, according to the Daily Mail.
The British news outlet reported that Omid Scobie, Markle’s biographer and friend, recently revealed that actress and Royal Family member “has her eyes set on the U.S. presidency,” while adding that she is “the embodiment of the American dream.”
Reports from Markle’s close associates in the past have also suggested Markle eventually making a run for the White House. One unnamed friend reportedly said that Markle was not interested in ever relinquishing her American citizenship, referencing her desire to enter U.S. politics as one of the primary reasons for that decision.
Of course, should Markle decide to launch a presidential campaign for 2024, she will likely have stiff competition for the title of being the first female president, as Vice President Kamala Harris, among other female Democrats, would likely launch bids for the top spot as well.
Trump is not a fan
According to Fox News, former President Donald Trump opined on Markle’s Oprah interview, with adviser Jason Miller revealing during a recent podcast that his boss is clearly not a fan of the Duchess of Sussex.
“She’s no good… I said it and now everybody is seeing it,” Trump reportedly said in the wake of the interview, according to Miller. Miller said Trump was hesitant to go on record right away with anything negative about Markle, as he was concerned about the cancel culture backlash, which was evidenced when Piers Morgan was essentially fired from Good Morning Britain over his critical take of Markle.
“Piers Morgan is the best, he’s the greatest, and they went and tried to cancel him simply because he criticized Meghan Markle,” Trump said, according to Miller.
Trump and Markle have indirectly exchanged barbs in the past, with Trump calling her “nasty” in an interview after Markle took a shot at the former president during the 2016 presidential campaign.
Only time will tell if Markle actually attempts to run for president, but it’s clear the duchess has no intention of leaving the international spotlight.
