There is no doubt U.S. soccer star Megan Rapinoe’s fans are just as sad as she is today.
It was just confirmed that Rapinoe’s grandfather, Jack, passed away on August 22.
Megan Rapinoe has captured the interest of this country not only for her soccer-playing but also for her controversial stances.
Had she not decided to use the national anthem as a form of political protest, there is little doubt she would have been the most popular female athlete in the country rather than the most polarizing.
Regardless of how you feel about her politics, though, there is no doubting her soccer talents.
That same talent that brought joy to many of her fans was also often the highlight of her grandfather’s day.
When the United States won the Women’s World Cup final on July 7, her grandfather was watching every second from his home in California. In fact, he called it the “happiest day” of his life.
Long Battle is Finally Over
Jack Rapinoe spent much of his adult life fighting fires in the city of San Bernardino.
Since retiring, Mr. Rapinoe suffered from congestive heart failure.
This made it very difficult for the retired firefighter to get around, which is why he had not traveled to see his granddaughter play in the World Cup final.
While he did get to see his granddaughter achieve the ultimate honor in her sport on TV, his health problems finally got the best of him.
On August 22, Jack Rapinoe passed away at the age of 94. Thank you for your public service Mr. Rapinoe and may you rest in peace.
