It looks like the Democrats are playing hardball when it comes to negotiating the next coronavirus stimulus package.
The Daily Caller reports that according to Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, the White House has presented four distinct stimulus offers to the Democrats in recent days, with each one ultimately being rejected.
Not even a counteroffer
During a Friday press briefing, Meadows discussed what has really been going on in the negotiations that have been held over the past week.
“Those four different offers have been actually rejected — but more importantly than that, they’ve not even been countered,” Meadows said, according to the Washington Examiner.
The lack of a counteroffer demonstrates the attitude that Democrats have taken in these negotiations; it’s either their way or nothing, even though it appears that the White House has made some significant concessions.
According to the New York Post, “One of the offers reportedly made was a four-month extension approved by President Trump at the current rate of $600 per week, assuring more than 25 million Americans currently reviving jobless benefits would be protected until December.”
No “shared values”
Meadows was joined at the briefing by both House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY).
“We don’t have shared values, that’s just the way it is,” Pelosi told reporters. “So it’s not bickering, it’s standing our ground.”
She added: “We put forth what we think is urgently needed by the American people because we recognize the gravity of the situation. They don’t, and that’s why they’re like, ‘What? Food?'”
“Politics as usual”
In addition to the four offers from the White House, Pelosi and the Democrats have also rejected a $1 trillion package from Senate Republicans. Instead, the Democrats are holding firm in demanding their own $3 trillion package, which includes such essentials as funding for marijuana businesses, according to the Post.
As Meadows put it on Friday, “What we’re seeing is politics as usual from Democrats on Capitol Hill. The Democrats believe they have all the cards on their side and they’re willing to play those cards at the expense of those who are hurt.”
Indeed, as the Democrats continue to play games it is the Americans they claim to want to help who are suffering.
