House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) says that the White House is already "obstruct[ing]" the impeachment inquiry that congressional Republicans are leading into President Joe Biden.

McCarthy said as much over the weekend during an appearance on Breitbart News Saturday.

Background

McCarthy's interview comes after he recently launched an impeachment inquiry into Biden.

Last Tuesday, McCarthy said, "Today, I am directing our House committees to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. This logical next step will give our committees the full power to gather all the facts and answers for the American public."

This is one of the main reasons why McCarthy says that he has launched the inquiry, namely, to give congressional committees investigative powers that they would not have absent such an inquiry. The purpose of the inquiry, therefore, is not necessarily to impeach Biden, but to determine whether there are sufficient grounds to impeach Biden.

The letter

The White House, Biden, and his fellow Democrats have been pushing back against the impeachment inquiry, insisting that there is no evidence linking Biden to any wrongdoing - certainly no evidence of wrongdoing that would meet the Constitution's impeachment threshold.

This, however, is not the only way that Biden is pushing back against the impeachment inquiry. The Biden House has sent a letter to the mainstream media in which Biden called upon them to "ramp up [their] scrutiny" of the impeachment inquiry.

Biden has since received much criticism for giving to the media what many are referring to as "marching orders." And, this is part of what McCarthy spoke about during his Breitbart interview.

"There is obstruction"

During the Breitbart interview, McCarthy spoke about this letter and the way in which it essentially gives to the mainstream media "talking points" about how to report on the Republicans' impeachment inquiry.

McCarthy said:

That talking point didn’t come from the campaign. It came from the taxpayer-paid White House counsel directly to media outlets. So think of the fear they have, whether they’re going to be allowed to go before government or others when you have the White House counsel threatening them to say investigate Republicans, there’s nothing here.

"I mean, right there is obstruction," McCarthy said.

There IS evidence

McCarthy went on to dispute the Democrats' claim that Biden is entirely innocent - that there is no evidence implicating him in any way. McCarthy even went through some of the evidence in detail.

McCarthy additionally said that more evidence is expected as the House continues its investigation.

Breitbart reports, "McCarthy said the next line of investigation will look into the bank accounts, credit cards connected to the shell companies, and other financial documents that can connect payments to the president."
