McCarthy delivers ultimatum to DHS Sec. Mayorkas – Resign or face impeachment inquiry

Republicans will take control of the House in January and they have made it clear that they fully intend to hold President Joe Biden and his administration to account for the devastating impact on the nation of their failed policies at the southern border.

In fact, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who is poised to become the next House Speaker, just demanded that Homeland Security Sec. Alejandro Mayorkas resign before January or face an effort to impeach and remove him from office, the Washington Examiner reported.

He also vowed thorough investigations of the administration’s actions and policies and even promised to hold certain committee hearings on location at the border instead of in Washington D.C. in order to force Democratic members to witness firsthand the chaos of the unsecured border under Biden and Mayorkas.

Resign or face impeachment

Those remarks from Rep. McCarthy came during a press conference he held with several other Republican House members on Tuesday during a visit to the southern border at El Paso, Texas.

McCarthy rattled off the astonishing statistics and distressing realities regarding illegal immigration and drug trafficking that undercut and disprove Mayorkas’ oft-repeated assertion that the border is “secure” and proceeded to give his ultimatum to the seemingly derelict and dishonest head of DHS.

“Now let me be clear — those responsible for this disaster will be held accountable,” McCarthy said. He referenced the incoming chairs of the Judiciary and Oversight committees, Reps. Jim Jordan (R-OH) and James Comer (R-KY), respectively, and stated, “They have my complete support to investigate the collapse of our border and the shutdown of [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] nationwide.”

“Our country may never recover from Sec. Mayorkas’ dereliction of duty,” he continued a moment later. “This is why today, I am calling on the secretary to resign. He cannot and must not remain in that position.”

“If Sec. Mayorkas does not resign,” McCarthy added, “House Republicans will investigate every order, every action, and every failure to determine whether we can begin an impeachment inquiry.”

Committee hearings to be held at the border

Fox News reported that in addition to demanding that Sec. Mayorkas resign or face impeachment in the next Congress, Rep. McCarthy also put Democrats on notice that they can no longer avoid or ignore the catastrophe at the border because he would compel them to visit the region as part of their duties.

Referencing the many voluntary Republican-led congressional member visits to El Paso and other border locations, the likely next House Speaker said, “After Jan. 3, no longer will members have to come down to the border to tour — we will hold our hearings at the border so the Democrats can no longer hide from the crisis they have created.”

Given the absolute arrogance and untouchable air routinely displayed by members of the Biden administration, it seems unlikely that Sec. Mayorkas will heed this call from McCarthy and resign in disgrace. If that is the case, however, he might want to go ahead and clear his calendar and get his paperwork in order in preparation for the imminent and inevitably hostile committee hearings he will soon face in the new year.
