Democrat mayor in California resigns amid mounting claims of sexual assault

The Democratic mayor of a northern California city has been forced to resign after multiple claims of sexual assault against him surfaced, including one from reality TV star Farrah Abraham, the Washington Examiner reports.

Windsor Mayor Dominic Foppoli said he would step down from his position after the San Francisco Chronicle embarked on an extensive investigation that unveiled accusations of sexual misconduct and assault against the Democrat from at least nine different women.

A pattern of abuse

According to the Examiner, Abraham says she was sexually assaulted by the 38-year-old mayor during a trip to Palm Beach, Florida, in March of this year.

The claims from Abraham and others have prompted the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office to open an investigation into Foppoli, but the local lawmaker continued to deny the claims in a statement announcing his resignation Friday.

“I have always and will always maintain that I did not engage in any non-consensual sexual acts with any woman,” he said, according to SFGate.

On the accusation from Abraham, who is 29, in particular, Foppoli remarked: “I recently learned that a woman in Palm Beach, Florida is accusing me of non-consensual acts while I was visiting there in March of this year. She made her allegations after she learned of the April 8, 2021, San Francisco Chronicle story.”

He added: “I have no doubt she is making these allegations in an attempt to leverage the situation to her advantage.”

A categorical denial

The mayor’s lawyer has also defended him, saying Foppoli “categorically denies having engaged in any of the abuses described,” according to CBS San Francisco.

“Sexual assault and sexual misconduct are very serious issues, and Mr. Foppoli takes these allegations very seriously,” attorney Bethany Kristovich added in a statement, according to the local CBS affiliate. She went on:

He has a long history of supporting women in his business, personal, and political lives, and the accusation that he has engaged in any of these misdeeds is deeply troubling. Mr. Foppoli prides himself on working to improve life for all of his constituents, and he will continue to maintain the fundamental value of treating everyone with respect.

Despite insisting he’s innocent, Foppoli said he was stepping down “with a heavy heart” effective last Friday, SFGate reported.

Foppoli is far from the first Democrat to make headlines for claims of sexual misconduct in recent months, but at least he had the decency to accept responsibility for his actions in the form of his resignation.

Meanwhile, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) has yet to resign despite what NPR described as “growing calls” for it over credible allegations of sexual misconduct against him.
