Marine who criticized top military brass over botched Afghanistan withdrawal hit with slew of charges

The U.S. military is bringing a whole slew of charges against Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller, The Daily Wire reports.

Scheller is the Marine who took to social media to demand accountability from military leadership following the Biden administration’s botched withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan. His comments came after a suicide bombing at the Kabul Airport that left 13 U.S. service members dead.

According to The Daily Wire, Scheller was thrown into the brig last week for violating a gag order. His was finally released on Tuesday.

Now, top military brass are throwing the book at him.

Charges filed

All-in-all, there are six misdemeanor-level charges that Scheller is facing, including contempt toward officials, disrespect toward superior commissioned officers, willfully disobeying a superior commissioned officer, dereliction in the performance of duties, failure to obey order or regulation, and conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman.

According to The Daily Wire, military leaders scoured Scheller’s social media posts to determine the ways in which he may have violated the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

For example, the Marine is facing six specifications of the “conduct unbecoming of an officer and a gentleman” charge because some of his social media posts, the military said, could be interpreted as inciting a revolution.

As evidence, charging documents pointed to statements made by Scheller including, “[E]very generation needs a revolution. It is time for change,” and, “Follow me and we will bring the whole f*****g system down,” as The Daily Wire reported.

What now?

Scheller’s next hearing is scheduled for Oct. 14 and will reportedly take place at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.

In the meantime, the Marine is garnering a huge amount of support, particularly from conservatives. His parents have been appearing on news networks like Fox in order to raise awareness about the situation. On an online fundraising platform, Scheller has raised over $2.5 million.

Some soured on Scheller after he made comments extremely critical of former President Donald Trump, including rejecting his help and accusing him of dividing the country, as Breitbart noted. The Marine seemed to try to walk back the remarks amid backlash.

It remains to be seen if the damage has been done, or if Americans will continue backing Scheller as he fights for his First Amendment right to free speech.
