The search for a family’s missing grandfather in Vista ended with a tragic discovery.
Francisco Larios, 83, was found dead on a Carlsbad hiking trail.
On Sunday morning, everything seemed normal.
Grandpop was home and the family was leaving for morning mass.
When they returned about 90 minutes later, he was missing, and the search began.
Mr. Larios had recently suffered a stroke, so the family was obviously concerned about his well-being.
Even more worrisome was the fact he did not have a phone or money, so he had no way of contacting anyone is case of emergency.
The family organized search parties, but they still could not find him.
Eventually, authorities were called in and used search dogs.
On Thursday, the dogs finally picked up a scent that led the to a creek bed by a local shopping center.
On Friday, authorities were contacted by a hiker that spotted the body.
While family members were obviously devastated by the discovery, they were overwhelmed by the support they received from the local community.
The family posted a thank you Facebook message to express their gratitude:
“Our family has been humbled by the incredible outpouring love, support, and prayers that we have received from everyone. We thank all of the you for efforts and your love, as it has kept us strong through this desperate time.”
As a thank you for the efforts by the local search and rescue, the family started a GoFundMe page (In Memory of Papi Chico) to help support their future efforts.
