It has been discovered that the Tennessee soccer coach who stands accused of filming himself raping young boys entered the United States illegally, Fox 11 News reports.
The accused individual is 63-year-old Camilo Hurtado Campos.
The allegations against Campos were first revealed in a press release from the Franklin, Tennessee, Police Department on Sunday, July 9, 2023.
"Camilo Hurtado Campos, a popular soccer coach, is being held for Rape of a Child and Sexual Exploitation of a Minor, the press release reads. "Detectives are expected to file several additional charges."
Police were initially tipped off about Campos, on June 22, by a local pizza parlor in Franklin County.
Per the press release:
Police were contacted by a local restaurant after staff found a cell phone left behind by a customer, later determined to be Campos. Workers took a look through it to try and find info that would lead them to the owner, so they could return the phone. What they found, instead, were dozens of unconscionable videos and pictures of children, and so they called police.
An investigation ensued. And, during this investigation, the authorities, according to the press release, "found hundreds of disturbing videos and pictures on that phone." The press release states that, "in many of them, Campos recorded himself raping unconscious boys between approximately 9 and 17 years old."
"Detectives say that the children in these videos were in such an unconscious state, that they might not even realize that they are victims," the press release states.
Authorities have been working to identify the victims. There are said to be at least 10, and, at the time of this writing, at least three have been identified, while several others have come forward.
Campos is a soccer coach who has been living in Franklin, Tennessee, for the past 20 years. It appears that it was largely through his coaching that he obtained his victims.
The press release states:
During off-hours, Campos frequented nearby school playgrounds in both neighborhoods where he approached kids and recruited them as players on his team. After gaining their trust, Campos invited many of the kids to his home where he drugged and then raped them.
Since the initial press release, the police have learned that Campos is an illegal alien, having initially entered the United States illegally.
Authorities are now referring to Campos's case as one of the most "shocking" and "egregious" that they have come across.
Campos's next court date is July 25.
