Although some progressive Democrats have advocated for increased implementation of socialist ideals in the United States, the American people remain largely unconvinced.
According to a new poll, citizens by and large still view socialism negatively — and they are not too keen on U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), either.
Poll: 3 in 4 voters reject socialism
Ocasio-Cortez, among others in her party, has advocated for socialist programs to be integrated into the nation’s government. Outside of her ardent supporters, however, such proposals are less than popular.
The Heartland Institute and Rasmussen Reports conducted its survey between Dec. 6–7 and published its results with a margin of error of around three percentage points.
Asked whether they preferred “a free-market economic system or socialism,” 75% of the 1,000 likely voters polled selected the former. Just 11% selected the latter option.
Ocasio-Cortez was the subject of another question asking respondents if they held “a very favorable, somewhat favorable, somewhat unfavorable, or very unfavorable impression” of the congresswoman.
Her “very favorable” and “somewhat favorable” results registered at 18% and 19% respectively. Another 20% said they had a “somewhat unfavorable” opinion.
“Calls for more socialism”
By far, the 38% who reported a “very unfavorable” impression of Ocasio-Cortez represented the largest share. Based on the numbers, the Heartland Institute concluded that a “strong majority of likely voters” have rejected socialist programs in the United States.
In a statement, the firm found that “increased calls for socialism by many on the far left” have not been successful in fundamentally altering the nation’s opinion.
“Only a sliver of likely voters think that the United States should abandon the free-market capitalistic policies that are responsible for making the United States the wealthiest nation in world history,” the statement continued.
Furthermore, polling results led the organization to determine that despite “the countless calls for more socialism among elites in media and Hollywood, Americans aren’t interested in adopting the same socialist policies that have led to mass poverty wherever they have been tried,” as the New York Post reported.
As for Ocasio-Cortez, she has been a champion of domestic socialism in the form of the Green New Deal, among other lofty proposals. According to Fox News, she asserted last year: “This is how we show that tackling the climate crisis is an opportunity to create economic stimulus and an economic boon not just for Wall Street but for working people.”
