House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) made headlines this week for her rhetoric regarding President Donald Trump and the 25th Amendment — and she is now facing some serious pushback from congressional Republicans, as reported by The Hill.
Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-GA) announced this week that she would introduce a resolution condemning Pelosi for “politicizing the 25th Amendment,” through which the Constitution provides a narrow path for removing a president unable to perform the duties of the office.
“Face the judgment of voters”
Speculation began to grow in recent days among some Democrats — including the House speaker — that the president had been adversely impacted by either his coronavirus infection, the treatments that followed, or a combination of both.
After alluding to such concerns multiple times throughout the week, Pelosi introduced legislation on Friday that would establish a commission to evaluate a president’s fitness to hold office as outlined in the 25th Amendment.
By all accounts, however, Trump has had a speedy recovery and was back on the job days after he was released from the hospital.
Considering that Pelosi pursued impeachment in a failed effort to oust Trump before anyone had heard of COVID-19, Loeffler and others in the GOP see it as a blatantly partisan ploy. Nevertheless, the speaker claimed in her announcement that the proposal “is not about President Trump.”
She said he “will face the judgment of the voters, but he shows the need for us to create a process for future presidents.”
“A desperate attempt”
Though the bill could gain early traction in the Democratic-controlled House, it would be dead on arrival on the floor of a GOP-led Senate.
Loeffler took time out of a furious re-election bid to denounce Pelosi’s latest move.
“Nancy Pelosi has disgraced the office of Speaker in a desperate attempt to rig the system and seize power,” the senator said. “If she is still serious about holding office, she should put a mask on, hit the salon, and respect the election results when Donald Trump is re-elected for four more years.”
Given her reference to a “process for future presidents,” Trump took a different approach in one of his Twitter responses, suggesting that “Crazy Nancy Pelosi is looking at the 25th Amendment in order to replace Joe Biden with Kamala Harris.”
Whatever her goal in launching the doomed proposal, the motivation seems to be the same ugly brand of politics that Americans have grown to expect.
