Liz Cheney vows to oppose Trump if he runs for president again in 2024

Liz Cheney, a Wyoming congresswoman and one of the top Republicans in the House, seemed to join the ranks of Democrats on Wednesday when she declared she would not support Donald Trump if he ran for president again in 2024.

According to Breitbart, Rep. Cheney’s comments came during an episode of Fox News’ Your World.

“I would not,” Cheney said, asked if she’d back Trump if he were the GOP nominee for the White House in 2024.

Cheney lashes out

Speaking with host Neil Cavuto, Cheney made her disdain of the former president more than clear.

“I’ve been clear about my views about what happened on January 6, about my views of the president’s culpability,” the congresswoman said of Trump, according to Breitbart.

“I obviously voted to impeach him. I think that it was the gravest violation of an oath of office by any president in American history,” she added of the riot at the U.S. Capitol that prompted a second attempt to remove Trump from office.

Cheney continued: “For us as a party, we have to be the party of hope and aspirations, and we cannot embrace insurrection and can’t minimize what happened January 6. I think all of us, regardless of partisanship, have an obligation and a duty to the Constitution, a duty to the peaceful transition of power.”

Cheney went on to say that she is against just about everything that Democrats in Washington, with President Joe Biden at the helm, are doing. But that apparently doesn’t mean she thinks Trump is a better alternative.

Trump returns the favor

Not long after Cheney’s Wednesday interview with Fox, former President Trump responded to her remarks by revealing that he would endorse a challenger for her House seat.

“So many people are looking to run against Crazy Liz Cheney — but we only want one,” Trump said in a statement, according to Breitbart.

“She is so far down in Wyoming polls that the only way she can win is numerous candidates running against her and splitting the vote,” the former president continued. “Hopefully, that won’t happen. I’ll make an Endorsement soon!”

This is shaping up to be the quintessential political fight between Trump and establishment Republicans, of which Cheney is a key player. Only time will tell whether the former president’s push to Make America Great Again will win out over the RINOs of Washington and beyond.
