Jared Kushner nominated for Nobel Peace Prize for Middle East peace deals

In a bit of good news for the embattled Trump family, former President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, has been nominated for the prestigous Nobel Peace Prize.

The New York Post reports that Kushner, who served as senior advisor to the Trump White House, and his deputy, Avi Berkowitz, have received a Nobel Peace Prize nomination for their role in establishing diplomatic relations between Israel and several other Middle Eastern countries.

The nominator

The individual who made the nomination is renowned lawyer Alan Dershowitz. Dershowitz has the ability to make such a nomination because he is a professor emeritus of Harvard Law School.

“The Nobel Peace Prize is not for popularity,” Dershowitz wrote in his letter to the Nobel Peace Prize committee. “Nor is it an assessment of what the international community may think of those who helped bring about peace. It is an award for fulfilling the daunting criteria set out by Alfred Nobel in his will.”

Dershowitz continued, “These Accords, which have brought about normalization between Israel and several Sunni Arab nations, fulfill all the criteria for the prize. They hold the promise of an even broader peace in the Middle East between Israel, the Palestinians, and other Arab nations. They are a giant step forward in bringing peace and stability to the region, and even to the world.”

Background

The “accords” to which Dershowitz referred are the “Abraham Accords.” They have also been called the Trump administration’s “Middle East Peace” deals.

What the deals do is establish diplomatic relations between Israel and, so far, four other Middle Eastern countries: the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco.

Trump, when he was still president, received a Nobel Peace Prize nomination himself for these accords in September 2020.

Dershowitz believes that Trump does deserve credit for the Abraham Accords, but that the Nobel Peace Prize would be more proper for the individuals who were directly involved in the negotiations, namely Kushner and Berkovits, among a few others.

The competition

Recently, several other nominations have been made for the Nobel Peace Prize, including failed Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams and activist organization Black Lives Matter. In an interview with Newsmax, Dershowitz explained the obvious, namely why the Black Lives Matter nomination is absurd.

“The Abraham accords fits all of those [criteria established by Alfred Nobel],” Dershowitz said. “And yet, Black Lives Matter has been nominated to win the Nobel Prize and they don’t fit any of the criteria.”

The Nobel Peace Prize committee is expected to choose the next winner in November 2021.
