Kevin McCarthy joins calls for Fauci to step down following email dump

The top Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives has made clear that he wants Dr. Anthony Fauci out of his role as head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).

According to Fox News, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) told Breitbart News in an interview Saturday that “the American people don’t have trust in Dr. Fauci.” Pressed on if President Joe Biden’s top adviser on COVID-19 “needs to go,” McCarthy indicated that he agreed: Fauci should either resign or face termination.

“Yeah, because you do not have the trust in him,” McCarthy said, according to Breitbart.

“Let’s find a person we can trust,” he added. “Take politics aside, I mean we’re talking about American lives here.”

“The wrong direction”

Speaking Saturday, McCarthy went on to say that it’s important for Americans to be able to trust their public health officials as investigations dig deeper into the potential origins of a pandemic that has left more than 600,000 Americans dead.

“We’re talking about an administration that shifted course when they first came in — the Biden administration — and gave millions of dollars back to the World Health Organization that lied to the world that is controlled by China,” McCarthy told Breitbart.

“We watched that they changed the direction when we were standing up to China to appease China now,” the Republican leader added. “This is the wrong direction, and I don’t believe anybody in America can trust that to get to the bottom of it.”

“Fire Dr. Fauci”

Fauci, for his part, has indeed become quite a divisive figure amid COVID-19, and especially after thousands of pages of his emails were released to the public, providing a glimpse into his many controversial — and ever-changing — stances on the coronavirus.

In the wake of the email dump, McCarthy isn’t the only one who has suggested it may be time for the NIAID chief to go.

“Our work to shed light on COVID-19’s origins has just begun, but one thing is clear: Dr. Anthony Fauci has repeatedly demonstrated a history of moving goal-posts when it comes to public health, withholding facts that don’t conform with his own narrative, and issuing inappropriate personal judgments that distort the truth,” Florida Sen. Marco Rubio (R) wrote in a Saturday op-ed for Fox News.

Rubio went on:

During the campaign, Biden said, “I’ll choose science over fiction.”

Now is his chance to make good on that promise and fire Dr. Fauci.

The doctor has been in his top position at the NIAID since 1984. Decades later, it seems his time there may finally be running out.
