Comedian Kathy Griffin has attracted attention in recent years for her antagonistic opposition to former President Donald Trump.
Now, she is making headlines for her battle against a more serious opponent, revealing that she has been diagnosed with lung cancer and will soon undergo surgery to address the disease.
“I’m about to go into surgery”
“I’ve got to tell you guys something,” Griffin announced in a social media update this week. “I have cancer. I’m about to go into surgery to have half of my left lung removed.”
She noted that she developed the disease despite the fact that she never smoked.
Doctors are “optimistic” since the cancer was found early and is limited to her left lung, Griffin explained. She further expressed hope that the disease will be treatable without chemotherapy or radiation and that she would soon regain “normal function” in terms of breathing.

“I should be up and running around as usual in a month or less,” she added. “It’s been a helluva 4 years, trying to get back to work, making you guys laugh and entertaining you, but I’m gonna be just fine.”
Reactions to the news
Encouraging readers to prioritize their own health screenings, Griffin noted that she had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
Reports indicate that cancer runs in Griffin’s family. Her older sister Joyce died of the disease in 2017 at the age of 65 and her older brother Gary died three years earlier of State 4 esophageal cancer.
Griffin’s mother died last year after battling dementia, an event that coincided with her own health scare when she was briefly hospitalized with what was believed at the time was COVID-19.
At the time of her latest announcement, she sat down for an ABC News interview to discuss the diagnosis and her battles with mental health and sobriety over the past few years. She faced widespread professional backlash after sharing an image in 2017 in which she posed with a replica of Trump’s severed head.
Although a few social media users reacted to the news with renewed criticism of the controversial entertainer, most reactions from fans and foes alike included wishes for a successful surgery and speedy recovery.
