Comedian Kathy Griffin says her mom is suffering from dementia

Comedian Kathy Griffin shared some sad, personal news this week on Twitter.

Griffin announced that her 98-year-old mother, Maggie, has “rapidly fallen” into dementia.

“She has rapidly fallen into the throes of dementia,” Griffin wrote on Twitter Thursday. “This is never easy for any child, I know this is a reality that millions of people deal with every year. But when it comes to my mom this is particularly hard because her sharp mind was everything.”

“In terms of how she is now, at this point she only knows my name and I love you,” Griffin added.

Her Inspiration

Reading through Griffin’s Twitter posts, it is quite clear Maggie has been a major driving force behind her comedy career.

Maggie was regularly featured in Griffin’s online videos and appeared in Griffin’s reality show, “Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List.”

At times, Maggie seemed even more popular than Griffin herself.

Griffin recalled receiving more than a few invitations that insisted her mother accompany her.

While not a fan of Griffin — who infamously appeared in a shocking photo with that depicted her holding the likeness of President Donald Trump’s severed “head” in 2017 — it is very easy to empathize with someone when they are losing a parent, especially to dementia or Alzheimers.

Maggie the Star

Griffin’s fans probably tuned in just as much to see her mother as they did Griffin.

This is a woman in her 90s that was known for both having a glass of wine in her hand and her dog close by her side.

She is a woman that in her 70s and 80s put women half her age to shame with her schedule.

Maggie was regularly seen by her daughter’s side at events and always seemed very comfortable doing the red-carpet routine.

Even as her fame grew, though, she remained true to herself.

Griffin hinted at that in one of the pictures she posted of her mother, stating her wine always came out of a box.
