Former California top cop Kamala Harris has embraced sanctuary cities and other lenient immigration policies to boost her anti-Trump credentials. That message may improve her image in the eyes of progressive voters. But as violent crimes committed by illegal immigrants continue to occur across the country, she is likely to face tough questions from victims and their families.
An 18-year-old was charged on Monday in the kidnapping and murder of a teenager with ties to MS-13 in Fairfax, Virginia. Six other people have been previously arrested on charges related to the murder; three have been detained by ICE and two are awaiting deportation.
MS-13 killing highlights toll of open borders
The unidentified suspect was charged in connection with the August 2017 gang killing of 18-year old Miguel Angel Ruiz Carrillo, who police said had ties to MS-13. Carrillo had met with gang members in the woods near his house, where he was attacked, kidnapped and never seen again until his body was found later that month.
The suspect was a juvenile at the time of the murder and was already in a Fairfax jail on other charges when he was brought to another facility in Prince William County this week.
This is not the first time ICE has detained migrants involved in violent crime. An American citizen, Kate Steinle, was murdered in 2015 in San Francisco by an illegal immigrant who ICE had detained but was unable to hold because of sanctuary city laws. At the time, Harris, who had aligned herself with the sanctuary cities movement early on, defended sanctuary cities and downplayed the killing.
As attorney general of California, Harris laid the groundwork for her open borders reputation by crafting lenient immigration policy that included visas to block immigrants who report crimes from deportation. Since she was elected to the Senate, Harris hasn’t veered from that stance, positioning herself as a champion of de facto open borders and illegal immigrants’ rights.
As a senator, Harris stands out for her efforts to block illegal immigrants protected by DACA from deportation. She was one of the most outspoken Democrats calling for a government shutdown last year after Trump rolled back Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).
Open borders Democrat?
Harris compared ICE to the KKK at the height of the illegal immigrant families separation controversy last year and she has stayed on message with an anti-Trump, open borders platform since launching her presidential candidacy. By pandering to the radical left, Harris may be trying to make up for the years she spent as a tough-on-crime DA.
The Virginia case is just one example of criminal illegal alien violence that radical progressives like Harris enable with their foolish “sanctuary” policy. Last week, an MS-13 gang member murdered a rival in broad daylight on the New York City subway. In December, a California cop, Ronil Singh, was murdered by an illegal immigrant during a traffic stop.
Since it doesn’t fit the Open Borders narrative to acknowledge violence perpetrated by illegal aliens, the left, with the help of their friends in the media, simply buries the stories or downplays the problem.
The Democrats are the party of open borders. With politicians like Harris leading their party, they can no longer deny it.
