Justice Alito explains that American flag flown upside down after Jan. 6 riot was part of a neighborhood dispute and not a political statement

 May 18, 2024

Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito said his wife flew their American flag upside down at their home in January 2021 in response to a hostile neighbor, Fox News reported. The issue came to light Thursday after the New York Times insinuated that the symbol showed solidarity with those wanting to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

The Times published the hit piece ahead of a case the Supreme Court will decide about the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. The news outlet attempted to equate Alito's flag with the "Stop the Steal" movement supporting former President Donald Trump.

However, Alito explained that his wife,  Martha-Ann Alito, decided to fly the flag this way following a dispute with a neighbor. The unnamed resident reportedly put up a sign saying "F--- Trump" yards away from where children wait for their bus, which led to trouble.

An Outrageous Attack

When Martha-Ann Alito attempted to resolve the profanity-laden signage with the neighbor, things only got worse. The justice claims his wife was then personally attacked by that neighbor, and things escalated from there.

Justice Alito said that the neighbor then turned away from disparaging Trump to smearing Martha-Ann. The neighbor even put up another sign accusing Marth-Ann Alito of being involved in Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election with the riot.

Things continued to spiral out of control for the couple. As the Alitos were out for a walk one day, one of the residents at the property displaying the signage reportedly called the judge's wife "the C-word."

Martha-Ann Alito decided to show her distress by hanging her American flag upside down as a way of sending a clear message. Justice Alito explained that it was only that way "for a short time."

He also added that he wished in no way to control his wife's behavior in this matter. Instead, he explained that she was responding to his neighbors who had gotten "very political" on his street.

The Left's Paranoia

The left is going crazy about the flag as the high court is about to hear arguments for Trump's claim of presidential immunity. The Times claimed that this flag issue was relevant, as well as the conduct of Justice Clarence Thomas's wife, who supposedly also supported the effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

"These cases were always going to be seen through an ideological and partisan lens. The fact that you’ve got two justices who are strongly identified not just with the Republican Party or the conservative movement but the ‘Stop the Steal’ movement raises that to another level." Cornell law professor Michael C. Dorf, who also previously clerked for Justice Anthony Kennedy, said.

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), who is chairman of the Judiciary Committee, echoed that claim in a statement Friday. "Flying an upside-down American flag — a symbol of the so-called Stop the Steal movement — clearly creates the appearance of bias," Durbin claimed.

"Justice Alito should recuse himself immediately from cases related to the 2020 election and the Jan. 6 insurrection," he added. Durbin and other leftists are mostly just outraged that the court is majority Republican-appointed and not under their influence.

Supreme Court justices and their families have every right to participate in the political process, Unfortunately, Democrats routinely apply a double standard against Republicans when it comes to that fact.
