Former President Donald Trump's legal issues continue to be bothersome for the leading 2024 Republican candidate.
According to the Washington Examiner, Trump lost out in a bid to have a judge dismiss the defamation lawsuit brought against him by author E. Jean Carroll.
Trump's legal team argued on four grounds why they believe the lawsuit should be thrown out, but Judge Lewis Kaplan clearly wasn't convinced.
The former president attempted to assert absolute immunity as one of his defenses.
This particular defamation suit is separate from the one that dominated headlines earlier this year which saw Carroll awarded a $5 million judgement.
The Hill explained:
The case, which is set to go to trial in January, is separate from the defamation and sexual assault suit from Carroll that went to trial earlier this year. The jury in that case found Trump liable for sexual battery and defamation and awarded the author $5 million in damages
Carroll's attorney, Roberta Kaplan, released a statement after Trump's failed attempt ton convince the judge to toss the cast.
"Judge Kaplan’s denial of summary judgment confirms that once again, Donald Trump’s supposed defenses to E Jean Carroll’s defamation claims don’t work," Roberta Kaplan said in a statement.
She added: "Trump chose to waive presidential immunity and now he must live with the results of that decision,” she added. “Today’s decision removes one more impediment to the January 15 trial on E Jean’s defamation damages in this case."
Trump has insisted that he's done nothing wrong, and has even gone on record as stating that he's not even sure who Carroll is.
Social media users offered mixed reactions to the judge's decision.
"Well he was appointed by another corrupt President that filled his pocket while in office and brought shame to the Oval Office. Not to mention everything Hillary Clinton did to smear a Presidential candidate and again while in office," one Twitter user wrote.
Another Twitter user added: "Once again his big ego controls his big mouth getting him in trouble. For those that don’t know, he loves to waste time trying to sue people. His lawyers aren’t enjoying representing him, especially on the chance he won’t pay them. Lord knows y they listen to his impulsiveness."
It's unclear what Trump's legal team's next steps will be on this particular front. Only time will tell if he finds a way to win.
