Tragic news rocked Hollywood this week when actor John Travolta announced the death of his wife, actress Kelly Preston.
In a statement via Instagram, Travolta confirmed that his wife died at the age of 57 after a two-year battle with breast cancer.
Preston’s absence from public events and film roles in recent years had resulted in speculation about her personal life.
“A courageous fight”
She had not made an appearance since the 2018 premiere of the film Gotti, in which she starred alongside her husband, who played the title role of mobster John Gotti. Her family kept the matter private and little information surfaced about her health prior to Travolta’s post this week.

It is with a very heavy heart that I inform you that my beautiful wife Kelly has lost her two-year battle with breast cancer. She fought a courageous fight with the love and support of so many. My family and I will forever be grateful to her doctors and nurses at MD Anderson Cancer Center, all the medical centers that have helped, as well as her many friends and loved ones who have been by her side. Kelly’s love and life will always be remembered. I will be taking some time to be there for my children who have lost their mother, so forgive me in advance if you don’t hear from us for a while. But please know that I will feel your outpouring of love in the weeks and months ahead as we heal. All my love, JT
“It is with a very heavy heart that I inform you that my beautiful wife Kelly has lost her two-year battle with breast cancer,” Travolta wrote. “She fought a courageous fight with the love and support of so many.”
“My family and I will forever be grateful to her doctors and nurses at MD Anderson Cancer Center, all the medical centers that have helped, as well as her many friends and loved ones who have been by her side,” he wrote.
“Brought life to everything she touched”
A family representative confirmed that Preston chose to “keep her fight private” and had been supported by those closest to her throughout the process.
“She was a bright, beautiful and loving soul who cared deeply about others and who brought life to everything she touched,” the statement concluded. “Her family asks for your understanding of their need for privacy at this time.”
Preston’s final film has yet to be released, as reported by Fox News. Last year, she filmed Off the Rails, which is described as the story of four friends in their 50s who decide to embark on a European adventure.
In one of her final interviews, she spoke about working with her husband during what would be one of her final roles, affirming that their “friendship,” “rapport,” and “intimacy” can be seen in their on-screen portrayals.
While Travolta — and, by extension, his wife — has been subject to plenty of media speculation and rumors throughout his lengthy career, this heartbreaking news should unite everyone in sympathy for a grieving family.
