Jimmy Carter says there should be an age limit for presidency

September 21, 2019 by Jen Krausz

At his annual Carter Center report, former President Jimmy Carter reportedly said he “hopes there is an age limit” to the presidency, according to Fox News. His remarks were aimed at Democrat candidates Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), both of whom will be in office over the age of 80 if elected in 2020.

“If I were just 80 years old, if I was 15 years younger, I don’t believe I could undertake the duties I experienced when I was president,” he told the crowd.

Carter was the 39th president from 1977 to 1981. He was in his 50s at the time. Biden will be 78 at the time of the election in 2020. Sanders will be 79.

Biden is the current Democrat frontrunner, but he has been plagued by a series of gaffes and inexplicable health issues over the last several months of campaigning.

Biden’s Health Status

As the sole moderate in the campaign polling more than just one or two percentage points, Biden seems to be the choice of most Democrats right now. But his gaffes and memory lapses have led to concerns that he might not have the mental acuity to be president.

Biden has forgotten where he was, when he was vice president, and what he said just minutes before. His verbal flubs number in the dozens at this point.

While Biden insists that he is in good health, Democrats are not wrong to be concerned about whether his mind is fit enough to lead the entire country.

Trump has taken to referring to Biden as “Sleepy Joe” and has made it clear that he doesn’t believe Biden is fit to hold the highest office in the land.

Is Age a Factor?

Sanders has also gotten criticism for having a “doddering” appearance. Despite the fact that he is in apparent good health, anything can happen to a person who is over 80.

No matter how old Sanders is, though, it is clear that he doesn’t have what it takes to be president. Giving everyone free stuff is not going to change that fact.

It’s hard to say if age should really be a factor in judging a candidate’s fitness for office, but it should be clear that these two are ill-equipped for the challenge.

Trump is only younger than Biden and Sanders by a few years, but his health has never been in question, and his stamina is nothing short of astounding.
