Jill Biden silent regarding Hispanic Heritage Month following taco incident

First Lady Jill Biden appears to be walking on eggshells lately.

Hot Air’s Karen Townsend notes that Biden, so far, has decided to remain silent about the fact that it is Hispanic Heritage Month.

Hispanic Heritage Month officially began on September 15, which was last Thursday. But, so far, the first lady has yet to even mention it, which is surprising.

It’s surprising because, given what we have seen from Biden in the past, it would be expected that she would mention Hispanic Heritage Month in order to pander to Hispanic voters. But, as Townsend points out, there may be a very good reason for the first lady’s silence.

A flashback

Townsend suggests that Biden’s silence could have to do with an incident that happened a few months ago.

The incident took place in July, at a UnidosUS event that was held in San Antonio, Texas. There, Biden sought to heap praise on civil rights icon Raul Yzaguirre.

Here’s what the first lady came up with:

Raul helped build this organization with the understanding that the diversity of this community — as distinct as the bodegas of the Bronx, as beautiful as the blossoms of Miami, and as unique as the breakfast tacos here in San Antonio — is your strength.

As you may remember, the comment didn’t go over well with the Hispanic community, and it didn’t help that the first lady also pronounced bodegas “bogedas.”

After much pushback, Biden decided to issue an “apology” through her press secretary. Michael LaRosa tweeted, “the First Lady apologizes that her words conveyed anything but pure admiration and love for the Latino community.”

Avoiding political death?

Townsend, accordingly, suggests that Biden is being silent with regard to Hispanic Heritage Month in order to ensure that she does not drive Hispanic voters any farther away from the Democratic Party.

Hispanic voters, after all, are going to be playing a large role in many elections, and, after the 2020 presidential election, it was made clear that a sizable portion of Hispanic voters has already switched over to the Republican Party.

The first lady, though, is planning to host an event celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. So, it does appear likely that she will break her silence at some point. We’ll have to see if, this time, she comes up with something better than comparing Latinos to “tacos.”
