Jason David Frank, ‘Power Rangers,’ dies at 49

Actor Jason David Frank, known for starring in the original “Power Rangers,” has died at the age of 49, Fox News reports

A representative of Frank has confirmed his death with People Magazine. “Unfortunately, it is true,” the representative said.

Many outlets are reporting that the cause of Frank’s death is unknown. TMZ, however, reports that Frank took his own life.

Per TMZ:

The actor and mixed martial artist died in Texas, according to his rep Justine Hunt. Sources with direct knowledge tell us his death was the result of suicide.

Remembering Frank

If you were a Power Rangers fan in the early to mid-1990s, then you probably will remember Frank as being Tommy Oliver the Green Ranger in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

Frank participated in many of the Power Rangers projects, including Power Rangers Zeo, Turbo, and Dino Thunder. Although Frank has several other acting credits to his name, it is clear that he took a special pride in his participation in these Power Rangers projects, as Power Rangers dominates his social media.

Frank, though, didn’t just act out combat on screens. He was also a very accomplished mixed martial artist in real life, where he was an 8th-degree black belt.

Frank practiced multiple different forms of mixed martial arts, including Taekwondo, Judo, and jiu-jitsu. His accomplishments in these areas were sufficient to earn him an induction, in 2003, to the World Karate Union Hall of Fame.

“It’s so sad”

Many are now offering tributes to Frank on social media and in interviews. This includes Walter Jones, who played the black ranger in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

Jones said:

He was an inspiration to so many people. His presence will be dearly missed. It’s so sad to lose another member of our Ranger family. Jason was one of the biggest pranksters on the show. He had a wild sense of humor. We had our shares of ups and downs but I stayed consistent about being an ear if he needed one. My prayers go out to his family and all that will miss him.

Frank is survived by his four children, which came from two separate marriages.

Frank’s representative has put out a statement, saying, “please respect the privacy of his family and friends during this horrible time as we come to terms with the loss of such a wonderful human being. He loved his family, friends, and fans very much.”
