Jamie Raskin calls for Clarence Thomas to step aside from Trump disqualification issue

 January 1, 2024

Democrat Jamie Raskin (Md.), one of the shrillest partisan defenders of Joe Biden in Congress, is calling for Clarence Thomas to recuse himself from any litigation involving Donald Trump's eligibility for the presidency.

Raskin claimed Thomas has a conflict because his wife, Ginni Thomas, participated in efforts to challenge the 2020 election results. The Supreme Court is expected to weigh in on whether Trump is disqualified for "insurrection" under the 14th Amendment.

Clarence Thomas recusal

Democrats have regularly targeted Thomas over his wife's political advocacy, but she has never been accused of any criminal wrongdoing.

Trump's defenders note that the former president has not been charged with insurrection (or convicted), either. But that isn't stopping Democrats from pushing to disqualify him.

Raskin - who sat on the partisan January 6th committee - told CNN's State of The Union that Thomas must step aside because his wife embraced "the big lie" that the 2020 election was stolen.

"Anybody looking at this in any kind of dispassionate, reasonable way would say if your wife was involved in the big lie and claiming that Donald Trump actually won the presidential election and [had] been agitating for that and participating in the events leading up to Jan. 6, that you shouldn’t be participating.”

Witch hunt intensifies...

So far, Trump has been found ineligible in two states. A Maine election official with ties to Joe Biden unilaterally decided that Trump engaged in insurrection, and the Colorado Supreme Court reached the same conclusion in a divided 4-3 ruling.

On the other hand, the Supreme Court in Michigan has rejected the 14th Amendment claims against Trump. The U.S. Supreme Court has yet to say if it will take the case, but it seems likely given the divided rulings.

Raskin seems to anticipate defeat. If the Supreme Court decides Trump can stay on the ballot, it means they were misled by the false notion that it's "undemocratic" to kick Trump off the ballot, Raskin said.

Well, obviously it is undemocratic to tell voters who they can and cannot choose for their president. Clarence Thomas doesn't need a conflict of interest to understand that - he's an intelligent man with common sense.

If the Supreme Court ends up defending Trump, Democrats are certain to leverage the decisions to further attack the court and question its authority. These lunatics will truly stop at nothing to protect their power.
