Israeli leader undergoes surgery

 April 1, 2024

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu underwent surgery over the weekend.

The operation was revealed in a statement that was posted on Sunday to the Israeli government's website.

The details

According to the statement, it appears that Netanyahu's doctors recently found, during a routine checkup, that the prime minister had a hernia.

"On Saturday night, during a routine check, Prime Minister Netanyahu's hernia was discovered. In consultation with his doctors, it was decided that, tonight, at the end of the agenda, the prime minister would come to the hospital for hernia surgery," the statement reads.

It has to be noted that this is a Google translation of the actual statement that was released by Netanyahu's office. The statement, of course, was released in Hebrew.

It continued, "The surgery will be performed under full anesthesia. At this time, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice Yariv Levin will take the place of [Netanyahu]."

Further details about the hernia, including its location, have not been provided. Typically, hernias are found in the abdomen, but it has not been confirmed that this is where Netanyahu's hernia was found.

The update

Since the release of this statement, the operation has been performed, and the Israeli government has provided an update on the 74-year-old Netanyahu's condition.

The Times of Israel reports, "Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is recovering following a successful hernia operation, doctors at Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem in Jerusalem say following the late-night procedure."

The outlet adds, "'He is awake, recovering, and speaking with his family,' says Prof. Alon Pikarsky, the hospital’s director of general surgery and the attending surgeon, in a short taped statement. He says the operation went as planned."

Background

This all comes as Israel continues to wage war on Hamas, following the Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack that the group launched on the Israel people.

The Washington Examiner reports that Netanyahu has found himself under significant pressure for his handling of the situation.

Per the outlet:

The surgery comes as Netanyahu faces protests in Israel, demanding he prioritize hostage release and find a ceasefire agreement. Netanyahu called off an Israeli delegation’s planned visit to Washington D.C. last week after the U.S. did not veto a U.N. resolution that called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.Israel’s war Cabinet is expected to convene Sunday to discuss ceasefire negotiations . . .

It is unclear whether Netanyahu was able to proceed as planned. Other than the hernia, Netanyahu is believed to be in good health for his age, although he does have a pacemaker for a heart condition.
