Intelligence report reveals Iranian plotting to assassinate former President Trump over 2020 killing of Gen. Soleimani

In January 2020, then-President Donald Trump ordered a drone strike in Iraq that killed Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force, who was deemed responsible for countless terrorist attacks in and around the region, including against U.S. troops and citizens.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has repeatedly vowed to avenge Soleimani’s death, and now a U.S. intelligence report indicates has been plotting to assassinate former President Trump, along with other officials, as an act of retaliation, the Conservative Brief reported.

In addition to the former president, the Iranians are also purportedly targeting former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former CENTCOM Commander Gen. Kenneth MacKenzie as top priorities for “lethal action” as an act of revenge for the killing of Soleimani.

Iran plotting to assassinate Trump, Pompeo, and others

Yahoo News was the first to report on an intelligence report from the National Counterterrorism Center dated June 16 that was not classified but had been labeled as “For Official Use Only” and “Not For Public Release” and was said to have been widely distributed among various government and law enforcement agencies across the nation.

The report stated, “The Iranian regime is waging a multipronged campaign — including threats of lethal action, international legal maneuvering, and the issuance of Iranian arrest warrants and sanctions — against select US officials to avenge the death of IRGC-QF Commander Soleimani in January 2020, raising the threat at home and abroad for those Iran views as responsible for the killing.”

“Since January 2021, Tehran has publicly expressed a willingness to conduct lethal operations inside the United States and has consistently identified former President Donald Trump, former Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, and former CENTCOM Commander General Kenneth McKenzie as among its priority targets for retribution,” the report continued.

The NCTC report added, “Iran would probably view the killing or prosecution of a US official it considers equivalent in rank and stature to Soleimani or responsible for his death as successful retaliatory actions.”

Yahoo News noted that the report went on to highlight other known or foiled Iranian plots, including in Europe and the U.S., as proving that Iran had the capabilities to strike outside the Middle East region as well as several statements from various Iranian leaders displaying their clear and devoted intent to seek vengeance for Soleimani’s death.

Iranian leaders have publicly called for Trump’s death

The Daily Mail reported that this intelligence report only served to officially confirm what was already generally understood for the past two years — Iran is desperate to retaliate against former President Trump and others over the drone strike that took out that regime’s top military commander.

Indeed, it was just in January that the supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Khamenei, had posted to social media an animated video that featured a drone strike against Trump while he was golfing at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. The video had been part of a nationwide contest intended to memorialize the two-year anniversary of Soleimani’s death.

Other Iranian leaders, such as President Ebrahim Raisi, according to the Conservative Brief, have also issued threats and demands that Trump be held accountable, with Raisi saying, “I’m telling all American leaders, don’t doubt that the hand of revenge will come” from the Muslim community.

These threats are undoubtedly concerning, but the NCTC report suggests that the U.S. government is taking those threats seriously, and, hopefully, the Secret Service and other federal law enforcement agencies will be able to successfully prevent any of the threatened lethal violence against Trump or other named targets from actually occurring.
