Iran has seized a British oil tanker and briefly detained another. Iran is escalating tensions and pushing the envelope.
Serious consequences must be enacted against Iran for this kind of behavior.
All hopes of Iran pulling back and deescalating the tensions are now gone.
Fox News reports that “Iran seized a British-flagged oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz Friday and briefly detained a second, marking a fresh escalation of tensions between Tehran and the West.”
This brazen attack on two civilian vessels utilizing the strait is unacceptable.
The claim of violating navigational rules was used as a reason for the seizure by Iran. However, it is likely retaliation for the British seizure of an Iranian tanker.
“Tensions between the UK and Iran flared up earlier this month when Royal Marines seized an Iranian tanker which was suspected of breaking EU sanctions.”
At this time military action is not being considered, and such action would be extreme.
Iran will face consequences but of the economic kind. World leaders are very wary of initiating a military conflict with Iran.
NBC News reports that “Britain’s Foreign Minister Jeremy Hunt said Saturday that the seizure “shows worrying signs Iran may be choosing a dangerous path of illegal and destabilising behaviour.”
Donald Trump responded to the attack by saying declaring “Iran is in big trouble right now. Their economy is crashing, it’s coming to a crash … It’s very easy to straighten out or it’s very easy for us to make it worse.”
Diplomacy is still better for us than war. But it is worrying that Iran continues to go down a path that may force our hand.
