Trump’s lawyers point out new precedent, say Hillary Clinton could face impeachment charges

The Senate impeachment trial is blowing up in the face of the Democratic Party, and former President Donald Trump’s lawyers are making use of every opportunity they have.

Michael van der Veen, who is representing Trump in the trial, pointed out this week that Democrats have set a new standard that theoretically could open up former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton to impeachment, The Washington Times reported.

By attempting to impeach Trump after he left office, Democrats have set the precedent that anyone can be impeached as a private citizen.

“This could happen to…the former secretary of state [Clinton]. It could happen to a lot of people. That’s not the way this is supposed to work,” Van der Veen said.

Impeachment broken

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) asked Van der Veen: “Is it not true that under this new precedent, facing calls to ‘lock her up,’ a future House could impeach a former Secretary of State and potentially disqualify her from any future office?”

Van der Veen confirmed Rubio’s concerns and left no doubt that impeachment has been stretched beyond its originally intended purpose by Democrats who want to prevent Trump from running for office again.

Not only has Trump’s legal team succeeded in raising questions about the precedent that this trial sets, but they also succeeded in exposing the rank hypocrisy by Democrats.

During an appearance Friday on Fox News, Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) said, “They also hoist a lot of Democrats in their own petard. I got to tell you, there are a lot of uncomfortable looks and shifting seats on the Democratic side of the Senate chamber as they played clips of people like Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders repeatedly saying that they’re going to fight for this and fight for that.”

He went on: “And other senators talking about punching people in the face. Or, for that matter, Kamala Harris talking about how violent unrest in our streets last year was not going to stop, as her own campaign was trying to bail out violent felons.”

Gaslighting

Democrats have raised the bar when it comes to gaslighting their political opponents. Democrats had no shortage of awful things to say about Republicans and how the nation would break into unrest if Trump wasn’t removed from office.

Thankfully, in the face of skeptical senators, Democrats have had to actually prove their case, and they have failed. In the late afternoon on Saturday, the Senate voted 57–43 to acquit the former president, The Daily Wire reported.

Democrats have spent weeks exposing their own hypocrisy, and it will cost them heavily in the next election cycle. Delaying President Joe Biden’s legislative agenda to impeach Trump may have been a critical mistake by those on the left.
