House Republicans hit Secretary of State Blinken with impeachment articles over ‘catastrophe’ in Kabul

While President Joe Biden ultimately bears responsibility for the chaotic withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan, he isn’t the only one in the crosshairs as lawmakers in Washington look for someone to hold accountable.

According to the Daily Caller, a pair of House Republicans have now introduced articles of impeachment against Biden Secretary of State Antony Blinken for his role in the ongoing disaster.

“Pattern of conduct”

According to the Daily Caller, the resolution was first filed by GOP Reps. Andy Harris (MD) and Ralph Norman (SC) on Friday, just one day after a deadly terrorist attack outside the airport in Afghanistan’s capital of Kabul killed 13 U.S. service members and scores of Afghan civilians awaiting an opportunity to be evacuated.

The eight-page resolution calls for Secretary Blinken’s removal from office for what the Republicans called a “pattern of conduct that is incompatible with his duties as an Officer of the United States.”

The resolution asserts that Blinken violated his oath of office by failing to protect the U.S. Constitution as well as U.S. citizens and national interests abroad. The articles also accused Blinken of having lied to the American people about the reality of the situation in Afghanistan and failing to keep Congress informed of ongoing developments, as he is required by statute to do.

“Unmitigated catastrophe”

“The Biden Administration’s handling of Afghanistan has been an unmitigated catastrophe,” Rep. Harris said in a statement on the matter, according to the Daily Caller.

“This preventable tragedy rests solely on the shoulders of President Biden and his Administration, and in particular the Secretary of State,” the congressman said. “We are the most powerful nation on the planet, and we must make clear to the Taliban that we will stay to get our people out as long as that takes.”

The Maryland Republican added: “Secretary Blinken’s complete and utter failure of managing this avoidable catastrophe makes him unfit for leadership, and I hope my colleagues will join me in pushing for his removal.”

“Deserves nothing less”

In a statement of his own to the Daily Caller, Rep. Norman largely echoed his colleague’s remarks, saying “the recent events in Afghanistan were entirely preventable.”

“The actions undertaken by this administration, but more specifically Secretary Blinken, were irresponsible and have placed countless American lives in harm’s way, resulting in the deadliest attack on American soldiers in the last decade,” Norman charged.

“Under the Constitution of the United States of America, the Secretary of State is tasked with informing Congress and American citizens on the conduct of U.S. foreign relations. In Afghanistan he failed to do so, leaving American citizens exposed in a city under the control of the Taliban,” he added, accusing Blinken of failing to ensure “the safety of American citizens abroad,” according to the Daily Caller.

“Secretary Blinken played a vital role in this foreign policy failure,” Norman told the Daily Caller, “and his dereliction of duty deserves nothing less than impeachment.”
