Earlier this week, it was reported that Hunter Biden, son of former Vice President Joe Biden, is under a federal investigation that is purported to revolve around his “tax affairs.”
It is now being reported that Hunter Biden has been served with subpoenas from federal prosecutors for business records regarding at least two dozen separate entities with which he has done deals.
Included in those subpoenas are demands for records involving Biden’s work on the board of corrupt Ukrainian energy firm Burisma as well as for multiple companies based in China that he did business with, The Daily Caller reported.
Federal investigation admitted
Hunter Biden, by way of a press release issued through his father’s “transition team,” said in a statement that he and his attorney had just learned that the “the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Delaware … are investigating my tax affairs.”
“I take this matter very seriously but I am confident that a professional and objective review of these matters will demonstrate that I handled my affairs legally and appropriately, including with the benefit of professional tax advisors,” he added.
Except, The Daily Caller noted, multiple reports revealed that the probe into Hunter Biden’s international business activities has been ongoing since 2018 and encompasses far more than just potential tax code violations.
More than just tax issues
That seemed to be confirmed when the Associated Press reported that the “breadth” of the subpoenas issued on Tuesday “underscores the wide-angle lens prosecutors are taking as they examine the younger Biden’s finances and international business ventures.”
The report noted that prosecutors appear to be particularly interested in Biden’s work on the board of Burisma, a controversial posting that began in 2014 while his father, then the U.S. vice president, was in charge of the Obama administration’s policies toward Ukraine. Hunter’s appointment raised all sorts of concerns about potential conflicts of interest, to say the least.
Also of interest to the prosecutors are Biden’s dealings with various Chinese companies and individuals, some or all of which are linked to the Chinese Communist Party.
It still remains unclear exactly what the prosecutors are looking for, but one of the AP’s unnamed sources echoed other anonymous reports that potential money laundering and other financial offenses were a key focal point of investigators, at least at one point.
Is actual accountability coming?
Despite the concerted efforts of the mainstream networks and social media platforms to bury bad news regarding Hunter Biden prior to the election, the reports keep coming.
It will be interesting to see if these subpoenas will actually lead to a measure of accountability for Hunter Biden or if he will get another pass.
