U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter steps down from House committees after indictment

A disgraced member of the GOP has just reversed his recent stance to remain active in his committee roles.

Rep. Duncan Hunter, after having been accused of misappropriation of funds, has agreed to step down from all of his committee assignments.

Bad Timing

The charges against Hunter could not have come at a worse time.

Currently, two former allies of Donald Trump are dominating the headlines, and not in a good way.

The first of those being former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort.

Manafort is staring down the barrel of some serious time in jail after having been found guilty of, among other things, tax evasion.

The other is Michael Cohen, Trump’s former attorney, took a plea and linked Trump to campaign finance violations.

That is important because Rep. Hunter was among the first members of Congress to come out in support of Trump.

Democrats are now using the Hunter debacle as a talking point to imply anyone and everyone associated with Trump is corrupt.

The Allegations

Hunter has been accused of using campaign funds for his own personal use.

Among other things, the Congressman is suspected of having paid for some rather expensive vacations with campaign donations.

Rep. Hunter insists he did nothing wrong and has echoed Trump’s sentiments of a witch hunt against him.

Hunter stated, “For over two years, I have made myself available to cooperate with this investigation in any manner.”

All the while, Hunter maintains, he has never been asked to clarify anything or even given the chance to tell his side of the story.

He further stated, “There has been a barrage of misinformation and salacious headlines in our media regarding this matter.”

Rather than feed the monster, the Congressman says he will stay silent now and allow things to play out, putting his trust “in the system.”

There are more than few people that believe this attack against Hunter is nothing more than the Democrats trying to ensure they capture his seat.

With the charges just now being announced, it is too late to take his name off the ballot and replace him with another Republican candidate.

Prior to this investigation, Hunter’s seat was considered one of the congressional seats the GOP did not really have to worry about losing.

Now, with this investigation, his seat is likely to be lost.
