House Republicans have made it clear that they will use their imminent majority control to investigate Hunter Biden’s voluminous foreign business dealings for any evidence that they compromised his father, President Joe Biden, or national security more broadly.
Hunter Biden has now reportedly hired another high-profile attorney to help defend him during the promised congressional investigations — Abbe Lowell, who previously served as an impeachment attorney for former President Bill Clinton, Breitbart reported.
Lowell will join a team of lawyers already retained by the Biden family, and while Lowell will reportedly be focused on defending against the GOP-led committee probes, other attorneys will defend Biden against ongoing Justice Department criminal investigations with regard to alleged tax law violations and false statements on a gun purchase form.
Another high-profile defense attorney hired
“Hunter Biden has retained Abbe Lowell to help advise him and be part of his legal team to address the challenges he is facing,” Kevin Morris, one of the attorneys already on the Biden legal team, said in a statement to NBC News.
“Lowell is a well-known Washington-based attorney [who] has represented numerous public officials and high profile people in DOJ investigations and trials as well as Congressional Investigations,” Morris added. “Mr. Lowell will handle congressional investigations and general strategic advice.”
In addition to Morris, the lead attorney, Biden’s team also includes attorneys Chris Clark and Joshua Levy, who will reportedly concentrate their efforts on defending against the DOJ probe into the tax and gun purchase crimes.
Lowell, who as noted was an impeachment defense attorney for former President Clinton, has also represented other high-profile Democratic figures, including former Sen. John Edwards (D-NC) and Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), as well as former President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner.
Mix of strategies considered by Biden defense team
Breitbart noted that hiring of Lowell as another defense attorney for Hunter Biden’s team potentially raises a problem that must be addressed, namely the reportedly already existing disagreements between members of the team and others in the Biden family orbit about what sort of strategy would be best to pursue.
The Washington Post reported about two weeks ago on the lack of a “unifying strategy” for the team to pursue, as some want to be aggressive and go on offense while others are content to lay low and react to situations as they occur.
Morris is in the aggressive camp and has reportedly made plans to potentially pursue defamation lawsuits against media outlets and individuals who are openly critical of Hunter Biden. He has also reportedly prepared opposition research to be used to discredit specific individuals like Tony Bobulinski, a former Biden business associate, and John Paul Mac Isaac, the computer repairman who publicly exposed Biden’s abandoned laptop.
There are others who favor a more cautious approach, however, including President Biden’s White House, which involves Hunter Biden keeping a low profile out of the public eye and Democratic allies taking opportunities to change the subject or criticize Republicans over the congressional probes at the expense of other matters Congress should be dealing with.
Meanwhile, there are also several Democrat-allied outside groups that are making their own independent plans to attack Republicans and help defend the Biden family.
How Lowell will fit in here, and whether he will favor the aggressive or cautious approach in defending Hunter Biden, is something that remains to be seen.
