In the final weeks of the presidential election, mainstream media sources largely downplayed new allegations about foreign business ties involving Democratic nominee Joe Biden and his son, Hunter.
In a statement this week, however, Hunter Biden said he was just informed that he is the subject of a federal investigation ostensibly focused on “tax affairs.”
“I take this matter very seriously”
“I learned yesterday for the first time that the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Delaware advised my legal counsel, also yesterday, that they are investigating my tax affairs,” Hunter Biden said.
“I take this matter very seriously, but I am confident that a professional and objective review of these matters will demonstrate that I handled my affairs legally and appropriately, including with the benefit of professional tax advisors,” he added.
In its own statement, Joe Biden’s transition team said the former vice president remains “deeply proud of his son.”
“President-elect Biden is deeply proud of his son, who has fought through difficult challenges, including the vicious personal attacks of recent months, only to emerge stronger,” the statement read.
Bad news for the Bidens
Although he expressed confidence that his name would eventually be cleared, the news about Hunter Biden was clearly unwelcome negative press for someone already facing significant public scrutiny.
Hunter Biden’s acknowledgment of an investigation into his affairs also appears to undermine the media’s efforts to keep stories about his dubious dealings from gaining widespread traction.
In fact, many mainstream media outlets ran the latest wrinkle in the sordid life of Hunter Biden, including Fox News and CNN, according to the New York Post.
Taxes and alleged money laundering
The Post further reported that investigators are specifically “looking into whether Hunter and his business associates violated various tax and money laundering laws.”
The scope of the probe reportedly also includes the contents of Hunter Biden’s allegedly abandoned laptop, which spurred many of the pre-election bombshell allegations against him.
CBS News reported that it had independently confirmed with Justice Department sources that the investigation was real and ongoing, dating back to at least 2018. Only time will tell, however, if it ever leads to the accountability that conservatives have long been hoping for.
