Throughout the 2020 presidential campaign season, Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, frequently made headlines for questionable behavior and suspicious financial ties to foreign companies.
Now that his father is president, the younger Biden is back in the spotlight — this time over the suggestion that he lied when filling out a background check form to purchase a firearm, which could constitute a felony.
A documented struggle
According to a new report from Politico cited by National Review, Hunter Biden replied “no” to a question asking if he was “an unlawful user of, or addicted to, marijuana or any depressant, stimulant, narcotic drug, or any other controlled substance” when buying a gun in October 2018, despite his well-documented struggle with addiction.
Of course, criminal prosecutions based on inaccurate responses to background check questions are rare, as reports note, but Hunter Biden has already attracted the wrong kind of attention for some time.
The younger Biden was embroiled in controversy throughout much of last year hinging on his dealings with foreign entities.
As for his drug problems, he was discharged from the Navy Reserve in 2014 and detailed the extent of his struggles in a forthcoming memoir.
“I’m moving forward”
At the time he was kicked out of the Navy, Hunter Biden released a statement calling it the “honor of [his] life” to serve and expressing regret that his actions resulted in his discharge.
“I respect the Navy’s decision,” he said then, according to The New York Times. “With the love and support of my family, I’m moving forward.”
Years later, Hunter Biden asserted that he was not on drugs when filling out the form to purchase a .38 revolver, as Politico revealed.
The situation went from bad to worse when Hunter’s sister-in-law, with whom he had been romantically linked, threw the handgun in a trash can outside of a supermarket. When they were unable to retrieve the firearm, they alerted local police, and it only spiraled from there.
The bottom line
Hunter Biden is once again caught up in a scandal that might land an ordinary American in deep trouble. Thanks to his last name and his father’s incomparable power, however, he has been able to escape serious consequences thus far.
Apart from his questionable response on the background check form, Hunter Biden confirmed late last year that he was under investigation for what he dubbed his “tax affairs,” as Fox News noted. On top of a border crisis and various other serious issues impacting the president’s term, the optics of Joe Biden’s son being charged with a felony would likely further damage his agenda.
