Gabby Petito, the 22-year-old YouTuber who was the victim of an apparent homicide, was laid to rest on Sunday.
The memorial service for Petito was held in Holbrook, New York, according to reports. It took place exactly a week after remains later identified as Petito were found at a campsite in Wyoming.
“The most amazing person”
Hundreds were reported to have attended the service, including Petito’s family and friends. Both her father and stepfather gave touching eulogies.
“Gabby is the most amazing person I’ve ever met,” Petito’s father, Joseph, said, according to E! News. “I couldn’t be more proud as a father.”
He also asked those in attendance to be “inspired by the way [Gabby] treated people, all people” and urged listeners to take lessons from his daughter’s life.
“If there’s a trip you want to take, take it, now,” he said. “Do it now while you’ve got the time. If there is a relationship that you’re in that might not be the best thing for you, leave it now.”
Gabby Petito’s stepfather, Jim Schmidt, asked listeners to keep hold of the good memories that they have of his stepdaughter.
“It’s OK to mourn for Gabby,” he said, as E! reported. “It’s OK to feel sorrow and pain. But we want to celebrate her and how she lived her life. We need to hold on to all of those wonderful memories we shared with her because that will be the answer. Let it be.”
Authorities have still not been able to locate Petito’s reported boyfriend, Brian Laundrie. At the moment, police consider Laundrie a person of interest in the case of Petito’s death. He is facing an arrest warrant for debit card fraud.
Officials have been searching for Laundrie in a Florida reserve, but have come up short. The latest reports indicate that authorities plan to scale back the search and to make it more targeted.
Laundrie is a person of interest for several reasons, including that he was the last person with whom Petito was seen alive. Now, there have also been indications that Laundrie was violent toward Petito in the past.
The latest reports indicate that when Utah police responded to an incident between the couple, they were made aware of claims that Laundrie had hit Petito. Despite Utah law, which requires that the police make an arrest in such a case, the officers let the two go. It’s a decision that will likely haunt them forever.
