House Republicans demand testimony from Fauci on origins of COVID-19

Republicans are demanding answers after thousands of emails to and from Dr. Anthony Fauci were published this week that some say show the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) director and top public health adviser to President Joe Biden had contradicting public and private opinions about the coronavirus pandemic.

According to Fox News, House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) was joined by Rep. James Comer (R-KY) in penning a letter to two top Democrats in the lower chamber asking for a broader probe into the origins of COVID-19 in light of new information.

Scalise, for his part, is the ranking Republican on the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis. Comer is the ranking Republican on the House Oversight and Reform Committee. The pair’s letter was addressed to the chairs of these committees, Reps. Jim Clyburn (D-SC) and Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), respectively.

Republicans: Fauci needs to testify

In their letter, dated Wednesday, Scalise and Comer wrote that they had already requested that committee Democrats join them in seeking to hold the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) accountable for its role in the impetus of what became a global pandemic.

“Recent reporting makes this request even more urgent,” they wrote, apparently referring to thousands of pages of Fauci’s emails that were recently published by outlets including BuzzFeed News.

“His emails debunk many Democrats’ claims from the past year,” such as that Fauci and others had been “muzzled” by the Trump administration, the congressmen asserted, according to Fox. “More importantly,” they added, “the emails contain new evidence regarding the origins of COVID-19, including the possibility it leaked from a U.S. taxpayer-funded laboratory.”

Americans “have a right to know”

The lawmakers went on to say that it’s “now imperative that Dr. Fauci come before our Committees to provide information related to the origins of the novel coronavirus as well as the U.S. government’s role in funding research that may have contributed to the development of the novel coronavirus.”

“The American people have a right to know what our government knew about the origins of the pandemic and when it was known,” the Republican congressmen added, according to Fox.

The search for answers continues

In closing, Reps. Scalise and Comer renewed their demand for “hearings to examine the origins of COVID-19, the possibility that it leaked from a CCP-controlled laboratory, and any involvement of U.S. taxpayer funds.”

They also insisted upon “unredacted versions of all of Dr. Fauci’s recently released emails.”

“Your continued inaction while facing mounting evidence of the CCP’s malicious conduct is concerning,” the Republicans wrote to their Democrat colleagues. But only time will tell if they ever get the answers they’re seeking.
