Fox News reports that Republican members of the House Oversight Committee just asked the White House of President Joe Biden as well as the National Archives to provide records of Hunter Biden’s communications with the White House during the administration of former President Barack Obama.
The request came as part of a letter that 14 GOP House members sent to Dana Remus, one of Biden’s lawyers, and David Ferriero, the head of the National Archives.
An odd inclusion
The Republicans start their letter by noting the fact that the Russian government recently included Hunter Biden on a list of prominent Democrats, including the likes of Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton, whom the Kremlin has decided to issue sanctions against.
The Republicans said that Hunter Biden’s inclusion on the list “raises serious questions.” The overriding question, of course, is what is Hunter Biden’s connection to Russia.
The Republicans go on to write that “the payment of $3.5 million to Hunter Biden or a company associated with him by Elena Baturina, a Russian businesswoman and former wife of former Mayor of Moscow Yuri Luzhkov, has raised the attention of the United States Senate and demonstrates Hunter Biden’s previous dealings with the Russian political class.”
The Republicans also noted that Hunter Biden has held several positions overseas, including “managing a Ukrainian energy conglomerate, to selling cobalt mines in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), to connecting his father to Kazakhstani oil oligarchs, and preventing a Romanian real estate tycoon’s conviction for bribery charges,” despite having no other qualifications than being Joe Biden’s son. And, they claim that Russian oligarchs have been buying Hunter Biden’s artworks for large sums of money.
One of the most important things that the House Republicans want to know is whether “the Russian government is attempting to influence American policy in Ukraine by exploiting Hunter Biden’s connection with his father — the President of the United States.” Another question is to what extent Hunter Biden has been profiting off of his father’s position in the U.S. government.
Deadline set
The GOP letter writers make four requests in their letter.
The first request is for “all documents and communications between the Executive Office of the President or Office of the Vice President and members or associates of the Biden family referring or relating to Russia or Ukraine from January 20, 2021, to present.”
The other three requests include one for “a list of all past and ongoing foreign business interests and past and ongoing foreign relations for members of the Biden family;” another for “all documents and communications, from January 20, 2021, to present regarding Hunter Biden’s artwork;” and another for “all policies and procedures in place to ensure the Biden family does not profit from the presidency of Joe Biden.”
The GOP asks the recipients to comply with these requests by April 14.
The White House has yet to respond to the request. It continues to downplay the significance of the various storylines regarding Hunter Biden, most notably, his overseas business dealings.
