House GOP report blames Jan. 6 Capitol riot on Pelosi

A group of House Republicans just published a new report that, in large part, places the blame for the Capitol protest of Jan. 6, 2021, on Democrat leadership – including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).

The 141-page investigative report comes from Reps. Jim Banks (R-IN), Rodney Davis (R-IL), Troy Nehls (R-TX), and Jim Jordan (R-OH).

The report focuses on “those areas of inquiry that the Democrat-led investigation has thus far ignored.” One of the most important questions that it looks to answer is: “why the Capitol was left so unprepared.”

The short answer, according to the House Republicans, is “leadership and law enforcement failures within the U.S. Capitol.”

“January 6th was Pelosi’s fault”

In a summary paragraph, the Republicans write:

There are several reasons the Capitol was left unprepared on January 6, 2021, including internal politics and unnecessary bureaucracy. Prior to that day, the U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) had obtained sufficient information from an array of channels to anticipate and prepare for the violence that occurred.

This supports prior reporting – including from Just the News – that found that the USCP had received “specific warnings in mid-December that there could be significant violence planned against the Capitol and lawmakers by protesters planning to attend the certification of the 2020 election results.”

The Republicans’ summary paragraph continues:

However, officers on the front lines and analysts in USCP’s intelligence division were undermined by the misplaced priorities of their leadership. Those problems were exacerbated by the House Sergeant at Arms, who was distracted from giving full attention to the threat environment prior to January 6, 2021 by several other upcoming events.

One of the most important findings of the Republicans, here, is that Pelosi and other Democratic leaders “were closely involved in security decisions in the lead up to and on January 6, 2021.” This contradicts Pelosi’s claim that she had “no power over the Capitol Police.”

In fact, the Republicans’ investigation found “staff within the House Sergeant at Arms office emailed Paul Irving that January 6th was Pelosi’s fault.”

Countering the left’s narrative

The Republicans are making no secret about the fact that they intend this report to undermine the House Jan. 6 Committee.

This is the partisan committee that claims to be investigating the events of Jan. 6, 2021, but, instead, has seemed to focus most of its efforts on trying to disqualify former President Donald Trump from ever again holding public office.

Banks, in a statement to Just the News, contrasts the committee’s “sham” investigation with the Republicans’ “useful report.”

“Our report exposes the partisanship, incompetence, and indifference that led to the disaster on January 6 and it the leading role Speaker Pelosi and her office played in the security failure at the Capitol,” Banks said.

He added, “unlike the sham January 6th Committee, House Republicans produced a useful report that will keep our Capitol and USCP officers safe with no subpoena power and no budget.”
